About this deal

Aimed at those who spend extended periods behind the wheel, the Nexar Pro is a dual-cam solution that can record video both inside and outside a vehicle. Comprised of two separate camera units connected by a cable, we found the setup to be pretty neat, even if it took up a fair bit of screen real estate. There’s inevitably a slight fishbowl effect, and you don’t quite get the detail you see in footage from the Nextbase 622GW or Thinkware Q800 Pro, but you can expect super-smooth motion, crisp image quality and well-balanced colour, even in overcast conditions. Our only real grumble is that, at night, the image can be a little fuzzy, while headlights and streetlights get a strong vertical flare. Typically, dash cams use a relatively small amount of energy and should make little difference to a healthy car battery. You don’t get the driver assistance systems of other dash cams, so it’s up to you or your vehicle to spot speed cameras and potential collisions. That said, you still get Wi-Fi and GPS connectivity, and we like that Vantrue has focused on video quality over unnecessary extras.

Meanwhile, models with 4G/LTE onboard can deliver alerts to your phone if your car is hit while parked, or help you locate your vehicle if you’re not sure where you left it – a feature that could save a lot of arguments in large and crowded car parks. You can even set up an emergency message to be sent if a strong impact crash event is recorded. How to fit a dash cam entering a default judgment against you (the plaintiffs automatically win the suit, as if you had refused to show up in court)Parking mode means the dash cam will continue to record even when your car is parked and you’re away from vehicle. Although they’re called dash cams, you shouldn’t actually fix the camera to the dashboard. Instead, they should be fixed behind the rear-view mirror to ensure the best coverage. We’re still not convinced by the Alexa support, but this is definitively the best dash cam that money can buy. We look carefully at how easy it is to fit the dash cam and manage any trailing cables, plus how easily it can be removed from the car and transfer any video to a laptop for viewing or storage. Finally, we review the captured footage to see how it compares to the footage from dash cams we already recommend.

If things go to court, and the court knows that camera evidence existed, then two things can happen: 1. You may be in trouble for destroying evidence. 2. In a civil court, the judge can and likely will conclude that any evidence that you destroyed or refused to supply would be against you. Parking protection to record what’s going on around your car can be a bonus, provided you don’t use it in an area where the sight of your dash cam is more likely to get your car broken in to and the dash cam stolen. Helpfully, both the display angle and camera lens are adjustable, so you can find the right position between road and driver. Full HD footage is shot in HDR at 30fps, delivering balanced exposure and enough detail to make number plates legible. That said, we found that video suffers from noticeable stabilization wobble. This distortion doesn’t reduce the detail, but footage is worse than from other Garmin dash cams. You’ll have to miss out on the odd feature here and there – there’s no onboard GPS or speed recording – but you still get voice commands, a parking guard feature and the same vault features as the Dash Cam 47. What’s more, there’s little between the two dash cams when it comes to video quality. In brightly sunlit or dull conditions it’s excellent, and pretty clear and blur-free at night, although the Dash Cam 47 seems slightly better at dealing with windscreen reflections and glare.Getting your dash cam hardwired is an easy way to ensure the power cable won't disconnect, plus it may end up freeing up your 12V outlet for other devices. At Halfords, we can install your dash cam professionally, with all cables hidden away.

The rule to follow is that your dash cam should not intrude into the area covered by your windscreen wipers by more than 40mm. You want complete coverage: Three cameras will be too many for most people, but professionals will appreciate the peace of mind they provide. Most dash cams are designed to switch off when the engine isn't running, so don't worry if your dash cam screen goes off or any power lights turn off. If your dash cam has parking mode, then it will automatically record with the engine switched off. As long as it plugged in properly at all times, then all features should work. Dash cam hardwiring For starters, you get a choice of recording in 4K at 30fps or 1440p at 60fps. You can even have 1080p at 120fps, which might come in handy if you want to watch it in slow motion after an incident (or just for fun). Using a dash cam is generally legal in both the UK and the US. In fact, certain bodies in both countries actively encourage the use of dash cams to reduce insurance premiums. That said, there are a few basic rules to follow to ensure your dash cam usage stays on the right side of the law.Neat and relatively compact, the Vantrue E1 is an attractive dash cam that’s capable of recording 2.5K video at 30fps. It can also record Full HD footage at a smoother 60fps, for enhanced detail while you drive. Results in our review proved sharp night and day, with accurate colors and acceptable noise in low light. Our testing also revealed that the optional polarising filter usefully reduces dashboard reflections. Yes, we recommend formatting your SD card every 3-4 week for regular every day users; and 2-3 weeks for heavy users.

Joining it is a tiny rear camera that records 2K video at 30fps. Like the forward unit, it covers a 140-degree field of view. That’s enough for the view front and rear, but rivals offer wider angles. Still, with a generous 128GB of internal storage, you get twice as much capacity as the previous Miofive 4K, with space for around 8 hours of record time before loop recording will start to overwrite the oldest clips. The latest version features a two-part windscreen mount, enabling you to remove the Miofive when you’re at home or wouldn’t want it visible. That’s a good thing, since it uses 64GB of internal eMMC storage rather than a microSD card. As such, you either connect the dash cam to a computer to transfer and review your footage, or use the accompanying smartphone app. The app is easy to use and has built-in sharing features for uploading clips to Google Drive, OneDrive and other cloud storage services. Still, there’s a lot to like about the Dash Cam Mini 2’s fuss-free operations and the fact that it’s so unobtrusive on the windscreen. If having no screen isn’t a dealbreaker, it’s a fantastic low-cost option.
